When should a run capacitor be replaced

As you know, the common run capacitors are CBB60, CBB65. The Run capacitor keeps a motor running smooth with no up and down spikes.

Run capacitor is a small, cylindrical object that sends energy to the motor that powers an air conditioning system. The AC capacitor gives your AC system the initial boost it needs to turn on and also provides continuous power for it to keep running.

The capacitor is just one component that makes up an air conditioning system. This small but mighty piece is a true workhorse, and like all parts of an air conditioning system, isn’t prone to malfunctioning. Without a properly-working capacitor, your system won’t be able to function as it should.When run capacitor fail, basically the system stops working. Not only that, it can cause damage to the motors that it’s connected to when it fails because those motors run very hot and keep going out on thermal overload every time it fails. 

If your air conditioner is not blowing cold air, a bad capacitor may be the reason.

However, look for the simple solutions first: Maybe you need to change the air filters, or it could be one of several other reasons.

Once you rule them out, if your unit is still blowing warm air, the issue may be the capacitor.

The most common signs and symptoms of a bad AC capacitor include:

AC not blowing cold air

AC takes a while to start once you turn it on

Humming sound coming from your air conditioner

AC shuts off on its own

AC won’t turn on



Additional, when a motor run cap begins to perform outside the allowable range, it is most often indicated by a dropping of the rated capacitance value (the microfarad value has gone down). For most standard motors, the capacitor will have a specified "tolerance" describing how close to the rated capacitance value that the actual value may be. This will be usually +/- 5% to 10%. For most motors, as long as the actual value is is within the 10% mark of the rated value, you're in good shape. As the capacitor is used and its capacitance drops outside of this range, you'll need to look at a replacement.
